Murano Glass - The History
It is believed that Murano glass originated from 9th century
Rome.  Murano's reputaion as a center for glassmaking was born
when the Venetian Republic ordered glassmakers to move their
foundries to Murano in 1291. Thas was due to the buildings being constructed of mostly wood, and they feared fire and destruction.
Murano glass is still interwoven with Ventian Glass. Murano's
glassmakers held a monopoly on quality glassmaking for centuries, developing and refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine),
multi-colored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation
gemstores made of glass. Today the artisans of Murano are still
using these century-old techniques.

The process of maiking Murano glass is rather complex. Most
Murano glass art is made using the lampworking technique. The
glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures.
As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval
when the glass is soft, and that is when the glass master can shape
the material.

Dichroic Glass - How It's Made

Dichroic glass is glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal

oxides which give the glass dichroic optical properties. Dichroic glass

was originally developed by NASA and its contractors for use in

satellite optics and spacesuit visors. Multiple ultra-thin layers of

different metal oxides (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminium,

zirconium, magnesium, silicon) are vaporized by an electron beam in

a vacuum chamber. The vapour then condenses on the surface of the

glass in the form of a crystal structure. This is sometimes followed by a protective layer of quartz crystal. The finished glass can have as many

as 30 to 50 layers of these materials yet the thickness of the total

coating is approximately 30 to 35 millionths of an inch (about 760 to

890 nm). The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone and,

by careful control of thickness, different colors are obtained.
